During October Nepalis all over the world celebrate their greatest festival Dashain. It involves 10 days of festivities with a lot of merriment and is centered around the powerful goddess Durga. The Hindus are involved in a lot of animal sacrifice during these 10 days to please the goddess. The Kathmandu valley is awash with the blood of goats, chicken, duck, and buffalo which are sacrificed at various Durga temples in and around the valley. A unique and very interesting thing takes place in the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley which adds to the theory of Hindus and Buddhists having lived in this country in harmony for many millennia. As the Hindus celebrate their biggest festival merrymaking and indulging in sacrifice the Buddhists around the rim of the valley are quietly praying in their monasteries for the salvation of the sacrificed animals and forgiveness for those who sacrificed them. It is a unique relationship between two of the oldest and largest philosophies of the eastern world. Come join us to experience the Sherpa Dashain from close quarters.
